2022 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport First Drive Review

OVERVIEW

WHAT IS IT?:

The Veyron’s reign as the world fastest production car is at an end, and the usurper comes from within. Yes, the £1.9m Chiron retains the Veyron’s fundamental proportions and powertrain, but it’s new in every other conceivable way, and built to bend physics to breaking point.

The Chiron

2022 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport First Drive Review

is not a hybrid. Unlike its closest competitors – the McLaren P1, La Ferrari and Porsche 918 - it relies solely on fossil fuels. Its engine is a development of the Veyron’s 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16, its gearbox a strengthened version of the Veyron’s seven-speed twin-clutch, and like the Veyron it deploys its immense power through all four wheels.

Bugatti Chiron with hybrid :

we would have added additional weight. We would have experienced package constraints, too, because this car doesn't have any areas where you can put additional stuff, so the styling would need to change,” Wolfgang Durheimer, Bugatti’s CEO explained. “We will dramatically raise the bar in terms of top speed, we will dramatically increase the power by 25 per cent, the aerodynamics are better, the road holding is better. We didn't need a hybrid.”

Whereas the Veyron Super Sport produced a piffling 1183bhp and 1106lb ft of torque, the Chiron develops 1479bhp and 1180lb ft. Oh, and at a constant top speed the Veyron could drain its 100-litre fuel tank in 12 minutes, the Chiron can do it in 9.

2022 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport Review Specs:

The Chiron has always been more about hypersonic grand touring than hard-edged corner carving, but whereas the Chiron Pur Sport tipped the scales toward the latter, the Super Sport’s tuning leans in the opposite direction. Although it’s not quite as fast as the stripped-out, ultra-limited-production Chiron Super Sport 300+, the Super Sport’s performance is focused on attaining maximum velocity above all else, and that means a more streamlined, longtail-style aerodynamic package when compared to the Pur Sport.

Bugatti Chiron Changes:

What's New?

The entire car is an all-new creation, with not a single component not undergoing reevaluation and redesign. The turbochargers are 69% larger than those on the Veyron, and they are now staged to reduce turbo lag. A new front badge hewn from silver features too, while revised aerodynamics and larger wheels help the Chiron remain planted on the road. Even the adaptive rear wing is larger than before and the whole design is arguably far more appealing than that of the Veyron.

Pros and Cons:

  • Incredible, accessible performance
  • Comfortable ride
  • Gorgeous design
  • Beautiful interior
  • Exclusive
  • Thirsty, even for a hypercar
  • Almost unattainable
  • Big body makes it tricky to park

2022 Bugatti Chiron:

The Chiron lineup is joined by the Super Sport, the regular version of the Super Sport 300+ record-breaking car that exceeded 300 mph in 2019. As for the "standard" Chiron, it continues unchanged.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance:

2022 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport First Drive Review

All Chiron models are motivated by an 8.0-liter 16-cylinder powerplant. This beast of an engine employs four turbochargers to generate a mighty 1500 horsepower and 1180 pound-feet of torque. Bugatti claims that the Chiron makes the dash from zero to 60 mph in a mere 2.3 seconds, and it has a top speed of 261 mph. If the Chiron's standard engine doesn't quench your thirst for speed, step up to the Chiron Super Sport. This model is equipped with a slightly more potent version of the base powerplant, and it produces 1578 horsepower. At our test track, the Super Sport got to 60 mph in just 2.2 seconds and, amazingly, hit 200 mph in under 15 seconds. Piloted by factory test driver Andy Wallace, a model with specs almost identical to those of the Chiron Super Sport logged a record-setting 304.773 mph test-track run. With every model in the Chiron lineup, power is sent to all four wheels by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
